Car Bomb Close to Atanasio Girardot Stadium

On December 2, 1992, the threats to commit a terrorist attack in Atanasio Girardot Stadium were fulfilled. Thirteen people were killed and 19 were injured in this attack.

“When we thought that everything was starting to change, Medellín is falling into a bottomless pit of a disgraceful war again (…) in which some of its participants have very little concern about what happens the population.” El Colombiano, December 4, 1992.

At 11:50 pm on December 2, 1992, a Renault 4 loaded with 120 kg of dynamite was detonated on Carrera 70, close to Atanasio Girardot Stadium, where the Nacional vs. Junior soccer match had finished minutes before. The explosive was activated by remote control when police car 203 was passing with five officers inside.

As a result of the attack, ten police officers and three civilians were killed, and 19 people were injured. The material damage amounted to more than COP 320 million. The blast affected 132 homes and 45 commercial establishments, and caused a power cut.
